This time of year, when the air temperature gets colder, you may notice that your teeth are more sensitive.
Just below the hard enamel surface of your teeth is a tissue layer called “dentin” which contains many tiny tubules filled with liquid. Where the enamel is thin or worn away, cold air can reach the liquid in these tubules causing a pain sensation to be triggered in the deeper part of the tooth.
Sometimes, just keeping your mouth closed and breathing through your nose in cold weather is enough to control the discomfort. As well, there are toothpaste products designed to reduce sensitivity.
I hope this information has helped you to minimize the impact of cold weather on your sensitive teeth!
